1978 Gitane “Professional Super Corsa” vintage road racing bike, 58cm – $875 (Huntington Beach)

Rare 1978 Gitane “Professional Super Corsa” — the same model as the bicycle that won the Tour de France in 1978 (see photo of winner Bernard Hinault riding this bicycle, painted in blue). This was Gitane’s top-of-the-line model! All Campagnolo Nuovo Record parts, Reynolds 531 frame!!!

Entire bicycle has been expertly tuned-up and rides great. All parts have been hand-cleaned and polished. Tires have lots of tread left and have been reglued to rims. All parts are in good working order. Frame has no dents or dings and paint is in remarkable condition, especially considering its age. The bike was only lightly used, so although it is not “new, showroom” condition and some components have scratches, it looks and rides great. Ready to ride!

• Frame:
o Seat tube: 58 cm, center to top, 56 cm center to center
o Top tube: 58 cm cm center to center
o Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing (top of the line)
o Campagnolo dropouts and dropout screws
o Prugnat lugs with custom cutouts; forkcrown has special Gitane insignia stamped on it

• Wheels:
o Hubs: Campagnolo low flange Nuovo Record hubs and quick releases
o Matrix Iso rims (for sew-up/tubular tires), 3-cross, DT stainless steel spokes
o Clement CF 2001 sew-up/tubular tires, made in Italy

• Crankset: Campagnolo Nuovo Record, 52-42 teeth
• Pedals: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Bottom bracket: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Shift levers: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Rear derailleur: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Front derailleur: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Freewheel: Maillard 6-speed, 14-22 teeth
• Chain: Sedis
• Headset: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Seat post: Campagnolo Nuovo Record
• Saddle: Challenge Compe (made it Italy)
• Brakes: Campagnolo Nuovo Record,
• Handlebar and stem: 3TTT, 3TTT Superleggero bars
• Includes water bottle cage
• New handlebar tape

I realize that this bike could be parted out and sold for a lot more, I just want to sell it as a complete bike (seems to me it would be a shame to do it otherwise).

Price is FIRM, cash only, no trades.

Kite Bike is a nice and tidy vintage bicycle workshop, based in Bucharest, Romania since 2008 . In this workshop i clean, repair, recondition, polish, lube, pimp and tune vintage bicycles. I ‘m collaborating with other workshops in Bucharest for chroming, coppering and painting services. Vintage bicycles means mainly road bicycles but also condorino, vintage city bicycles and of course, my friends and my bicycles. I’m using professional bicycle tools, professional cleaning substances, weldtite bearings, finish line grease and other great stuff. All the frames and components have been roughly inspected, cleaned, lubed and polished if necessary, so you can correctly judge their actual condition. All possible defects are written down in the auction if the problem couldn’t be solved. In the majority of my projects I’m using period correct components.

The rubber has met the road.

Two Wheel Revival

I’ll admit, it was sorta anticlimactic. By it, I mean the first ride. It wasn’t really, but let me explain.

As mentioned previously, I got the tires installed and came home early evening and put the wheels on. We had plans that night and I had minutes to get ready. But, how could I not just take one little lap around the block, just one?

I put on the wheels, my shoes, and the Gitane on the road.

The first pedal stroke is smooth and joyous. Gliding down the small hill by house I hit the brakes. My body jerked and recoiled at the screaming sound from the brakes. Damn. Painful. My neighbor was up the street and quickly turned around with a look of shock / horror on his face as I came shooting towards him. I zipped by, nervous smile in tow, not wanting to touch the brakes I couldn’t say how…
